Nativo Self Serve Wizard

Problem
Larger advertisers and publishers use Nativo’s platform as a managed service, where internal teams setup, launch, and manage ad campaigns on their behalf. In addition to these users, smaller advertisers and publishers began wanting to manage their own ad campaigns on our platform. Our platform being designed for managed service team members, our platform would not be intuitive to self serve users who are unfamiliar with setting up a native ad campaign. We needed a new self serve wizard to help these users setup their native ad campaigns.

Role
I was responsible for designing the UX and UI of the self serve wizard. Working with the Vice President and Director of Platform Operations I made sure there was alignment between my design and the company’s business goals and requirements. I worked with the Director of UX to nail down all UX design decisions delivered high fidelity mocks to the front-end developers.
Discovery
Working with the Vice President and Director of Platform Operations, I gathered feedback from early self serve users who had already been setting up campaigns with our current UI. Finding where users were frustrated and confused using our current UI was invaluable feedback that helped me develop the initial structure of the self serve wizard. Next I did some market research on how other digital advertising platforms allowed users to set up their ad campaigns. Instagram, Facebook, and Google all had platforms that were designed for both advertisers launching their first native ad campaign and veterans who were looking to launch multiple ad campaigns at once.

Facebook’s guided campaign creation wizard provides users with a wealth of configurations while providing intuitive navigation.

Process
With my user feedback and market research I began sketching the different variations of the wizard. After several rounds of reviewing my sketches with my Director of UX, we agreed on an initial design. With this design I began to create high fidelity mocks that I later used to receive more feedback from the business stakeholders. I enlisted the help of the platform operations team, my Director of UX, Director of Web Development, and our Vice President of Product to review the mocks and give any feedback they had. After multiple rounds of feedback and updates the mocks were ready and were handed off to the front-end developers to build.

One of the main challenges we faced when creating the wizard was creating an intuitive navigation that helped users move between steps. Several different variations were sketched up, each with its own unique navigation system.
Results
The self serve wizard was launched in February 2020. The new design was successful in condensing settings across three different forms into one six-step wizard. The wizard also provides context to users setting up an ad campaign for the first time through help text and intuitive UX design. Feedback continues to be collected, which will be used to launch improved iterations of the wizard, including new features that were unable to be included at launch.
